Every Mile Matters: Ideas, Information, Implementation

Katy Anthes is a founder and partner of the Third Mile Group. She is also an instructor at the School of Public Affairs at the University of Colorado at Denver. Previously Anthes was a policy analyst and program director for the Education Commission of the States, a non-profit interstate compact. Her work has focused on education leadership and governance issues across the nation, and she has considerable experience managing large-scale grants, developing and fundraising for national initiatives and working in multiple states with many stakeholders and partners across the country. During a total of seven years at ECS, Anthes worked on a variety of education issues including accountability, P-16 and teacher quality. Prior to ECS, Anthes worked at a nonprofit consulting firm dedicated to developing nonprofit organizational effectiveness. She has also been involved in community organizing on environmental issues in the state of Oregon. Anthes completed her doctorate in public policy at the University of Colorado at Denver (UCD) in May 2007. She earned her master's degree in public policy from UCD and completed her undergraduate work at the University of Oregon.

Charles R. Coble, a founder and partner in The Third Mile Group, is regarded as a national expert on teacher education programs and teacher development. He is a former professor of science education and dean of 13 years at the nationally award-winning school of education at East Carolina University, Greenville, North Carolina. He served for six years as the vice president of university-school programs for the 16-campus University of North Carolina (UNC). In that capacity, Coble led the development of the University School Teacher Education Partnerships in all UNC teacher preparation institutions, and organized the UNC Center for School Leadership Development – a confederation of high-quality programs for the initial and continuing preparation of teachers and administrators. Coble also led the design and construction of an $11 million state-of-the-art professional development center facility that also houses the James B. Hunt Jr. Institute for Educational Leadership and Policy. He has directed over $12 million in grants and contracts and is the author or co-author of 10 books and over 70 published articles. Most recently, Coble was the vice president of policy studies and programs at the Education Commission of the States. A native of North Carolina, he earned his undergraduate, masters and doctoral degrees from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

Catherine Walker, a founder and partner in The Third Mile Group, has extensive experience and expertise in project management, policy research, writing, editing, constituent communication and relations, accounting and meeting planning and coordination. She previously served as director of communications at the Education Commission of the States (ECS), where she oversaw development of ECS' publications and products, both web and print, and public relations and marketing efforts. She also served as special assistant to the president and information management liaison in the Information Clearinghouse. Prior to joining ECS, Walker served 16 years as office/financial services manager and meeting coordinator for the State Higher Education Executive Officers Association. For a short time Walker was an elementary school teacher in Colorado Springs School District 11. A native of Colorado, she earned both a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music History and Master of Arts in Teaching from The Colorado College.
